Richard Madden to Dress Up at Comic Con

12 . 07 . 2013
I actually hadn’t seen [The Rains of Castamere] until about two weeks ago and I was doing a commentary for HBO and you’re meant to talk when you see these things about, Oh we did that on this day, and I hadn’t seen it so I was actually really quite stunned and also a bit teary because it’s emotional and…watching Richard Madden -who plays Robb, my son- when he gets slaughtered…I was practically in bits I couldn’t speak. And it’s just like radio, the last thing you want on radio is dead silence. You don’t want silence, you want a reaction, apart from crying…

‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners interview: The Red Wedding — EXCLUSIVE | EW.com

Benioff: I remember turning to the script supervisor after one take where Richard was dying and I was like, “That was a good take.” And she was just bawling. It’s a bittersweet thing. You’re making all these people sad. But on the other hand, that’s kind of the idea. If we shot The Red Wedding and nobody got emotional, it would be a failure.

What was shooting the scene like for the actors?

Weiss: We tried to call Michelle [Fairley] afterwards. She wasn’t answering. A week later she wrote an email saying, “Sorry I haven’t been able to talk to anybody about the show for the past week because I’ve been so shattered.”

Benioff: Michelle is such a powerhouse. Obviously nobody does anything for the awards and it’s a big ensemble show. But I hope she does get recognition for the entire season and culminating in one of the greatest death scenes that’s ever been shot.

And there’s a moment in this scene where we look at each other … it’s Robb Stark essentially saying goodbye to his mother and giving up, and rather than it being something really bad, there’s a moment of tragedy and utter relief, actually, because these two characters have fought and fought and fought and fought, and it’s finally over.

Me and a bunch of other journos did a conference-call Q&A with Richard Madden the other day. It was sad.
